Meet María and Virginia, two beneficiaries from Cajamarca who have never cooked standing up

María Vitalia, our first beneficiary in Yonán, Cajamarca

Cooking over firewood in Peru is a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation. Unfortunately, this way of preparing food causes many women to suffer from back pain, respiratory diseases, cataracts, among others.

María Vitalia, our first beneficiary in Yonán, Cajamarca, told us that since she was 28 years old she suffered from back pain. She always cooked her food crouching or “folded in two”, as she usually says, and even sitting down. Now, almost 85 years old, the pains have intensified.

After the process of building the improved kitchen, María stated that it will be the first time that she will cook standing up and completely upright. “Many thanks to the Tullpa+ project. For as long as I can remember I have never prepared my food stop,” she said.

Virginia Ruiz, another of our beneficiaries in Cajamarca, allowed us to learn more about her family and tell us why it is necessary to change a tradition (cooking traditionally) learned by her grandmother.
