Ministry of the Environment commits to support the Madre de Dios Jurisdictional Program to reduce deforestation
Regional Governor Jefferson Gonzales Enoki met in the city of Lima with the Minister of the Environment, Wilbert Rozas, with the aim of presenting him with the progress of the Madre de Dios Jurisdictional Program to reduce deforestation that will allow the region to access international climate financing and finance the implementation of part of the activities of the Regional Low Emissions Rural Development Strategy (ERDRBE) of the Regional Climate Change Strategy (ERCC), which seek to stop the loss of forests, thus contributing to the international climate commitments of the country (the NDC).
At the meeting, Governor Gonzales Enoki, who is also president of the Amazon Regional Commonwealth that groups Loreto, Amazonas, San Martín, Ucayali, Huánuco and Madre de Dios, stressed that regional governments have functions recognized by law and the right to be partners and direct actors in initiatives that help reduce deforestation as competent authorities in climate change and executors of mitigation measures in their jurisdictions.
He also highlighted that a participatory process open to citizens and transparent is being carried out throughout the Madre de Dios region. It is the first time in Peru that a REDD+ project publishes its agreement -GOREMAD-Mercuria- and socializes it in a broad participatory process to validate commercial conditions.
For his part, the Minister of the Environment promised to create a technical table between MINAM and the Amazon Regional Commonwealth to support jurisdictional initiatives throughout the Amazon, supporting and recognizing their authority and their important role against deforestation.

It is carried out within the framework of the Agreement on Cooperation and Sustainable Development and Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions between the Regional Government of Madre de Dios and the company Mercuria in the month of July 2022.
