More than 740 thousand homes between Cajamarca and Junín cook with polluting fuels, according to INEI

Learn more about “TULPA+” a project to implement improved kitchens in the interior of the country that will help reduce environmental pollution and health problems.

According to the latest report from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), an average of 745,321 households between Cajamarca and Junín cook with polluting fuels such as firewood, manure, dung and charcoal.

This same problem leads to others such as respiratory diseases. The departments with the largest number of population and households exposed to health problems due to the use of polluting fuel for cooking food are Cajamarca, Piura, Puno, in addition to Loreto.

For this reason, Paskay, with the strategic and financial support of Mercuria, has been preparing a project to implement environmentally friendly improved wood stoves, adding to the mitigation of climate change and the preservation of the environment.

The positive direct impact on health and the reduction of the carbon footprint has made more and more homes use this technology, since the design of the kitchens is adjusted to each reality and territorial space.

In addition, it is important to point out that, in rural areas of Peru, there is no access to household gas, so firewood continues to be used as a source of energy. The use of firewood in a traditional way with kitchens or spaces not prepared for its efficient use endangers people’s health, generating respiratory and carcinogenic diseases.

“TULPA+”, which means stove in Quechua, is the project that will generate “more conscious kitchens for our community”, that is, more conscious about caring for the environment, quality of life and the use of eco-friendly energy.

In Cajamarca, 2 provinces (Contumaza and Cajarmarca) and 5 districts (Baños del Inca, Namora, Llacanora, Matara, Chilete and Yonan) will be intervened, while in Junín, in one province and 11 districts. The cost per improved kitchen is 678 soles and will benefit more than 10,000 families.
