JURISDICTIONAL REDD+ PROGRAMS

What are Jurisdictional REDD+ Programs?

Jurisdictional REDD+ Programs are efforts by regional governments to support the implementation of activities that reduce deforestation and forest degradation.

These programs channel international climate financing to invest in part of the activities foreseen in various strategic planning tools that do not have the necessary funds for their implementation, such as:

  • The Low Emissions Rural Development Strategy (ERDRBE)
  • The Regional Climate Change Strategy (ERCC)
  • The Concerted Regional Development Plan (PDRC)

In this way, regional governments access international climate financing to stop deforestation and contribute in the fight against Climate Change, in addition to contributing to the country in achieving its international climate commitments through Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).

Activities

The final activities of these programs will be defined in a participatory manner with their populations, but we can mention the following as an example:

  • Satellite monitoring and surveillance of forests
  • Comprehensive community surveillance
  • Regional competitive funds for sustainable productive projects
  • Forestry and agrological research
  • Reforestation of degraded areas
  • Implementation of agroforestry systems such as cocoa or coffee
  • Strengthening of sustainable production and management capacities
  • Life plans in indigenous communities

The regional governments of Ucayali and Madre de Dios have signed agreements with the Swiss company Mercuria for the financing of jurisdictional programs.

Paskay’s role

Paskay has a support and technical accompaniment role for the REDD+ Jurisdictional Programs in the departments of Ucayali and Madre de Dios. Among his assignments is the development of a regional participatory process and the preparation of the Project Design Document (PDD).

This technical contribution is financed by Mercuria and is not deducted from any budget statement of the Regional Government or the Program, in accordance with the provisions of the inter-institutional cooperation agreements signed by both regional governments with the company Mercuria.
